SENIOR PUBLIC AFFAIRS AND POLICY OFFICER

Age Action is Ireland?s leading advocacy organisation for older
people. Age Action works to ensure that older people?s voices are
heard at the highest level of Government and that the lived experience
of older people informs policy responses to their needs.

THE ROLE

Reporting to the Head of Advocacy and Communications, the Senior
Public Affairs and Policy Officer is part of a team made up of a
Communications Officer, a Policy Stakeholder Engagement Officer and
the Information Service. Age Action values a strong work ethic and a
dedication to bringing about real and meaningful societal change. The
Senior Public Affairs and Policy Officer is central to informing and
influencing that change in the performance of their role to;

* Lead Age Action?s advocacy through monitoring and contributing to
the policy context and political landscape in Ireland with particular
reference to how this relates to ageing in Ireland
* Produce policy positions in appropriate formats by collecting,
organising and interpreting quantitative and qualitative information
(internal and external) ensuring the positions are grounded in the
lived experience of the diversity of older people in Ireland,
highlighting good national and international practice experience
* Manage relationships with relevant stakeholders including local
TDs, Senators and their staff, Government Departments and agencies,
and other bodies as appropriate to work
* Assist colleagues in the team to develop and roll-out an
engagement strategy to motivate advocates and others to be involved in
Age Action?s policy formulation and public affairs work
* Support Age Action?s spokespersons and represent the
organisation in stakeholder fora including press
* Contribute to an internal Age Action approach towards coherent
advocacy across all functions.

KEY COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

* Excellent understanding of public policy development and how it can
be influenced with a proven track record in seizing opportunities to
inform and influence policy makers to improve laws, policies and
services for people
* Demonstrated aptitude for applying an equality and human
rights-based framework to social policy
* Demonstrated aptitude for accurate and evidence-based writing as
well as the ability to present to key decision makers through a range
of communications methods
* Working knowledge of the policy context and political landscape in
Ireland with particular reference to how this relates ageing in
Ireland
* Excellent communicator with proven written, verbal and
presentation skills
* Strategic thinker with capacity to see big picture
* Creative, dynamic person with ability to work on own initiative
* Strong team player with good negotiation, collaborative and
leadership skills
* An ability to work on multiple projects, reprioritise, meet
deadlines and secure results.
* High level of IT competency.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

* Masters level qualification in gerontology, social policy, human
rights, law, economics or a related discipline
* At least 5 years experience in a policy development or research
role
* Proven experience of planning and producing own research and
policy documents
* Proven record of producing accurate and high-quality work to tight
deadlines
* Proven experience of effective project management
* Experience of advocacy work at a national and/or local level
* Experience of nurturing relationships with a broad range of
stakeholders.

LOCATION: Dublin/Remote
CONTRACT: Permanent, Full Time
